My head hurts...

I had a really sore tummy all night and so I went to bed early (just after midnight) fell asleep for a bit... now here I am. I hate having screwed up sleeping patterns. My tummy ache is feeling a bit better (and so it should more than 5hrs on) and I decided that I'd steal thecubiclereverend's idea to share photographs through the flickr thingo. So, if you wanna see some terribly fanatical and nutty shots of me galloping around California for Michael Jackson, thinking I'm a hardcore thugged out gangsta who's starring in a hardcore movie, or if you just wanna browse some pictures of me and my lovely friends and pets, then click to see my photographs.

I also want to plug three people who I have already began to love a lot since starting at blogger just a week ago. :)

Carmel - She embraced my journal the first entry I made and I had been viewing hers for about a week prior. I love her posts and we share an affinity for beautiful kitties and other animals. :) And I read that she's a qualified blood sucker... and that works out well for me since blood's always being stolen from me and my last pathologist made my vein collapse! Oh yeah! Carmel is so sweet and lovely and I'm proud to have her on my blog roll already!

Antonia - We're the same age and she's from the UK and she has such staunch faith in The Catholic Church that I'm left a bit astounded. I aspire to some day have this kind of unfaltering faith and dedication to God, and with all these new positive and embracing bloggers around me, I think I won't have a problem :) Already I'm on her blog roll and she's on mine. I hope we'll become good friends :)

The Cubicle Reverend - I love someone with an awesome sense of humour and a good sense of wit about them. From reading his blogs, I've learned that he is both of those things and more! He's intelligent and his blog is full of other great bits and pieces and links to awesome readings. I'm honored to be a cubehead, and to have been welcomed so quickly in to the cubisphere! :)

And so now I can hear my dog snoring her absolute head off on my bed and so perhaps its time for bed. But before I go, I have a few questions -- maybe someone could help me with them. I apologise if they are stupid, but the knowledge won't simply fall in to my lap! :)

Firstly, I haven't done a confession before. I would like to. I didn't exactly know what to expect but I found this nice little piece and I felt a little clearer on the matter. The thing that confuses me is that it says we do not need to confess things that are not mortal sins. My question is, is what is the difference between a mortal sin and something that is not a mortal sin?

Secondly, I asked my Mum this (no, I have desire to hide my faith anymore, and so I'm comfortable with it, and she mostly pretends I'm not religious -- it works nicely for both of us.) question earlier but of course she didn't know the answer. What is the difference between protestants and catholics?

Lastly, I hear the priest in church talking about The Roman Missils (sp?) and making references to it. What is this and how is it relevant?

If you can help, I'd be largely appreciative!

Oh and why does my side bar information turn up at the bottom of my screen now?? This displeases me immensely. >=(

It's me again! You probably don't like me. I just stumbled upon your blog, so that's how I found it. =)

But to answer one of your questions...a mortal sin is a sin that cannot be forgiven by God. Now there is belief that God will forgive everything, and he will if you confess it! The sin has to be very wrong, you have to be doing it intentionally, and you have to know what you are doing, doing it with a clear state of mind. Not like if you did it in extreme emotion.

Something like intentionally physically hurting others for your own pleasure. Say one of the ten commandments? Theft, murder....

Not stuff like you know, eating too much or being a little selfish. Cursing too much, things that you don't to with any real intent but just out of petty habits.

If you don't confess to these horrible things then...you know. You'll be going where you don't want to go.

Though something in me tells me that you aren't guilty of anything of the sort. :)

I hope I helped!

Bless!

Hey Jessica
aww! thank you so much for your sweet words! *blush* I dont deserve them! I'm sorry to hear you're having sleep problems; it's never very fun when to be really tired but just not able to sleep.

That thing you found on confession pretty much sums up the practicalities! At the start of every confession it's important to tell the priest how long it's been since your last confession, that way he can better pitch his words or wisdom/helpful advice that he gives. I think it would be helpful if you tell him that you've never done this before, that way he will help you out! I know it sounds scary but afterwards it's so refreshing! Everything has gone! the slate is wiped clean!

Here is a really good explanation on what a mortal sin is:

http://www.saintaquinas.com/mortal_sin.html

I'm sorry annonymous, but one thing you said about mortal sins is not quite true. They CAN be forgiven by God. EVERY sin can be forgiven by God, if we sincerely repent of it.

While all sins offend God, mortal sins are a conscious choice to reject God's will and to do something SERIOUSLY sinful even though you know know it is wrong, and so they cut off our relationship with God.

Whoever told you that only mortal sins should be confessed is incorrect. All sins you can remember need to be confessed because all sins are on offence against God.

The full name for the Roman Missal is 'The General Instruction of the Roman Missal' (sometimes called GIRM). Basically, it is a liturgical book that contains the details and instructions for how the mass should be celebrated in the Roman rite of the Catholic Church. It gives details on the wording of the prayers that priests must say for ordinary Sundya masses, for masses of special Saints says, for mass for funerals, weddings, when you need to knee, stand, sit etc etc. I have never read it so I dont know what else is contained in it (maybe Carmen's fiance can help out better on this one as he seems to know this kind of stuff!)

Finally, Protestants and Catholics....

wow, okay! huge topic!

Basically, Jesus died in AD 33....and at Pentecost (a few months after he died) the Catholic Church was born.
So for 1,500 years basically the only Christians in the world were Catholic and then a guy in Germany decided he didn't like how the Catholic Church was doing things so he 'protested' (hence the term 'Protestant') and broke away and formed his own semi-Catholic-ish group.
Then loads of other random individuals carried on 'protesting' and so were born the Lutherans, Baptists, Church of England, Presbyterian etc etc etc etc etc.
If you type in 'How old is your Church' into google you get some good links.

Here's one:
http://www.catholicism.org/pages/howold.htm

anyway, hope that was of some help!!
Hope you slept well in the end!

lotsa love,

Sorry, I'm a protestant. Nestled in to the presbyterian church like a chick beneath a mother hen. Though Pastor Chryst from PreachRBlog seems to think I'm a closet Lutheran. And I hate to admit all the years I spent in the catholic church growing up wasn't exactly spent paying attention.

I think i would do confession if it was MORE like Catholics way of doing it. In my religion you have to do it face to face and the facial expressions arent pretty :(

I remember i did it once when i was a kid and i was messed up man...and it was such a blur. Everything was spinning..i still dont know what i said...or even if i lied! Man i dont want to even know!

MJJ Insider said...

Val, sometimes (depending where you give confession) you do it face-to-face. I'm pretty sure I would have been doing it face-to-face with the priest I had a meeting with.

I need to reset that up.

LOL funny, everyone tells me that they used to lie in confession cause they didn't know what to confess. It's kinda ironic!

G. suggested I write a list.

I dont know where to post this...but it might as well be here.
In the Orthodox religion- music is a sin. Idolising people - stars from hollywood, peace activists is a sin. (yes i know idolising is wrong) but is respecting someone who is famous - who is also human wrong.
My confession would prob be that i idolised M. too far, but then he will try and turn me against him and his evil music . Grrr!

MJJ Insider said...

There's nothing wrong with admiration, as far as I'm concerned. I've always been careful never to replace M with God, or look up to him and think of him as someone to "believe in" because that would be borderlining... But, I respect M. probably so much more than I've ever respected anyone. I look up to him for everything he has shown me thru his life, for everything he has done to serve others -- and to draw inspiration from the kindness he has shown to strangers for decades -- well, I don't think that could be a bad thing? I love him for all he has shown me, even in the ways of Religion (before I became religious I didn't know anyone who could recite Bible just like M.) ... It's interesting. And anyway, I think you're only supposed to confess things that you are truly sorry for, cause what would be the point if you're just gonna keep doing it? ... I'm NOT sorry for always supporting M. for respecting him and admiring him and I don't believe it's wrong at all.

:) Maybe the idolising thing, perhaps... but we could use a different word for it :P hahaa jk.

See "i believe in" people. Normal people, famous people whatever. You, M, G(not your G- my G lol, all my friends etc.

See i thought confessing is for everything you've done wrong. And i did have M up on a big pedastool once and i am sorry for that- but i aint stop believing in him. Cus he has been blessed with the qualities in representing children worldwide.
That was in conflict to everything my mother believed. Imagine having your mum quote that the devil will come to this earth disguised as someone incredibly nice and incredibly popular. Where poeple would do anything for him and that M was the devil who would bring forth the second comming. (hey it could even be R. lol. jk)
That was prob the most scarring thing she ever said to me. :(
